Hurworth to Australia
Today around 60% of all Australian Mewburns are descended from Thomas Mewburn, a weaver, and Mary Ann Buck who lived at Hurworth on Tees in County Durham where they had married in 1807.
It is unclear from whom Thomas Mewburn was descended. When recording the baptisms of his children the Hurworth parish records consistently state that he was from the parish of Darlington yet there are no Mewburn births registered at Darlington around the 1760-1790 period that the 1807 marriage date might suggest (not that the lack of a registered birth means much) and which covers the 1872 date of birth that his burial record indicates (age said to be 46).
Thomas did move later to Leeds, Lancashire, in the early 1820s where William, the last of his children, was born and he died in 1828 at nearby Bolton le Moors where his son Thomas later lived and maintained the law.
Mary Ann was originally from Lancashire, having been baptised at Burnley in 1787, the daughter of John Buck and Elizabeth Mellor. After Thomas’s untimely death she married again in 1831 this time to Abraham Crompton, a cotton weaver, and lived at Royton, Lancashire until her death in 1851. The Cromptons had no children.
We do know that Thomas and Mary Ann had eight children.
Thomas Mewburn (c1782) and Mary Ann Buck tree
The Australian association begins with John Mewburn, Thomas’s eldest son. Remarkably, John’s transportation to New South Wales seems to have shown that Australia was a land of opportunity. All three of his other surviving siblings married and then migrated to Australia in his wake, though the youngest, William, eventually moved on to New Zealand. This chapter will deal with only the three male lines.
John, the convict transportee, was the first.
John Mewburn, 1810, and Mary Ann Bachelor
John was born on the 20th September 1810 at Hurworth-on-Tees (with baptism on Xmas day) to Thomas Mewburn, a weaver, and Mary Ann Buck.
After John’s conviction in 1830 he was first held, as was usual, in a prison hulk, the Retribution, at Woolwich while awaiting a ship (a note from that time said he had been in custody before so perhaps he does not deserve too much sympathy).
He was transported on the Lady Harewood on the 15th of October 1830, bound for New South Wales, arriving early in 1831. He was then sent to work for John Thorne at Parramatta (notes mention that he was protestant).
John gained his Certificate of Freedom on the 6th February 1840. In this he was described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall, with brown eyes and hair, and of a dark, ruddy, freckled complexion. He was said to be from “Durham” and trained as a whitesmith (someone who worked with soft metals like pewter or tin).
On the 5th of February 1843, well after he had gained his freedom, he married Mary Ann Bachelor at Yass, NSW. John’s death was registered at Burrowa, NSW in 1891 at which point his parents were confirmed as Thomas and Mary (so it seems we are dealing with the right person). He is buried at Rye Park Methodist Cemetery in NSW where his death is given as 12 Mar 1891.
John’s wife, Mary Ann Bachelor is said (in some trees online at Ancestry) to have been baptised 15 July 1827 at St George Hanover Square in London to James Bachelor (a servant of Lambeth Mews) and Sarah. There is another baptism at St Sepulchre on 01 Jan 1828 also to a James (a warehouseman of Glass House Yard) and Sarah and it is not known what evidence there is to decide between the two (the first names her as Mary Anne rather than Mary Ann, though that is hardly likely to be significant). Presumably family records in Australia provide the answer? Mary Ann died 1st March 1910 and is apparently buried at St John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frogmore, NSW (There is a memorial stone for both but the graveyard it is in is unclear).
These Mewburns can be found in various parts of NSW but mostly around the Boorowa district north of Canberra, also including Yass, Rugby, Rye Park and Goulburn.
John and Mary Ann had 11 children in New South Wales – eight girls and three boys. All reached adulthood and ten of them married with the three boys each carrying on the Mewburn name.
John Mewburn (1810) tree
Their histories here are based largely on the government birth, marriage and death indexes so are a bit formulaic. The full records are too expensive. That’s the penalty of long-distance on-line working.

Ann, or Annie as she was known, was born on the 1st December 1842 at Yass in NSW and baptised on the 5th.

The NSW Deaths Index has an entry:

However, having Thomas and Annie as parents makes this record improbable, though no other is known.

Ellen was born about 1854 and died in 1941 at Boorowa, New South Wales. She married Abraham Gorham in 1876 at Burrowa.

William Mewburn (1868) tree
William and Jane had only four children, a small clutch by family standards. Data about them is difficult to obtain as they are too recent, so some unproven dates from trees posted on Ancestry have been used so must be treated with extreme caution. They were:

Thomas Mewburn, 1816, and Jane Hurst
Thomas was the second son of Thomas Mewburn and Mary Ann Buck. He came to Australia of his own accord. He had been born at Hurworth just south of Darlington in County Durham and was baptized there on the 8th April 1816. However his life’s long journey meant that he died on the 27th February 1902 at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia where he is commemorated with his wife, who herself had died on the 7th October 1872.
Migration was not a new thing for him, though, as he had moved with the family to Lancashire where he married Jane Hurst, daughter of James Hurst and Elizabeth, on the 21st August 1837 at Deane. He was farming at that point, in a modest way as a husbandman. She was a local girl born about 1814 in Lancashire. Thomas and Jane were illiterate and made their marks at the time of marriage.
They were counted in the census of 1841 at Bolton le Moors, Lancashire but by then Thomas had branched out and had become a police constable. These were early days for the force and its members could be a motley crew with a high turnover rate. Drunkenness on duty was a principal cause of dismissal. Thomas was made of better stuff, though, and by the 1851 census had become a sergeant. However, there were by then ten mouths to feed.
There is record for a 37-year old Thomas arriving at Melbourne from Liverpool in October 1853 on the Samaria. He had son John (listed as a farmer) and young James with him. He presumably wanted to find work and a place to live before bringing the whole family out.
It was nearly eighteen months later, in February 1855, before wife Jane arrived on the Shalimar with the 7 other children. Only one of their children, Elizabeth, was later born in Australia.
Thomas was clearly an enterprising man and established a brick making works at Ballarat.
Thomas Mewburn (1816) tree
Thomas and Jane had eleven children in all. Online indexes for Victoria are among the least informative in Australia so it is difficult to pursue genealogy for that State. Family details in this case, after arrival in Australia, are partially from a tree posted online at
John Mewburn 1837-1921
John was born about 1837 in Bolton, Lancashire, though no record has been found, but his existence seems clear as he appears with the family in the census of 1841 at Bolton le Moors, Lancashire and in that of 1851 at Great Bolton, where he was an apprentice clogger, before making his way to Australia with his father in 1853.
There is a record in New Zealand for an 85-year old John Mewburn dying in 1921 – and that is believed to be him. There is no trace of him ever having married or had children. A little more is said about him in the New Zealand page.
Emma Mewburn 1838-?
Emma was born between Jan-Mar 1838 in Bolton, Lancashire. She had a child, Margaret, by some unknown father in 1868 but also in that year she married James Crompton at Victoria. Whether or not he was the child’s father remains undetermined.

Thomas devoted himself to farming but retired from that in 1919, according to an obituary for his wife. He died on the 29th October 1930 at Nihill and his estate went to probate on the 17th February 1931 at Melbourne.
He received this obituary in the Horsham Times on the 7th November 1930:
"Another of the fast dwindling pioneers of the Western Wimmera passed away on Wednesday week. Mr Thomas Mewburn, aged 87 years. He was born at Bolton, England, and came to Victoria with his parents in 1851, when his father established a brick-making business at Ballarat. Deceased selected land at Kiata when it was thrown open for selection, and relinquished active farming 17 years ago, when he went to reside in Nhill. In his younger days the late Mr Mewburn was a noted athlete. His reminiscences of the early days of Victoria were interesting, especially of the gold diggings in the sixties. He was a fine type of Australian pioneer who blazed the trail of the early days."

Thomas Mewburn 1887-?
Thomas was born in 1887 at St Peters, New South Wales. Presumably he died young as there is no further trace of him.
Alfred Mewburn, 1853-1929
The story of this family is split between Victoria and Western Australia. Alfred was born between Jan-Mar 1853 at Bolton, Lancashire and emigrated to Melbourne in February 1855 on the Shalimar with his mother and most of his siblings. He married Margaret Birrell in 1887 at Victoria.
The story of the family is then one of hope and disillusionment. Within three or four years of the birth of their fourth child Alfred headed off to Kalgoorlie to look for gold, spending at least three years at the optimistically named Treasure Lease in Kamballie. It did not work out for him in terms of riches or even modest prosperity but thereafter he remained in the region at Pilbara. He worked mostly as a labourer, latterly on the railway, until his death in 1929.
Meanwhile, Margaret (born 1864 at Victoria) was left behind in Victoria with the three surviving children. She died in 1909, with the youngest child still just 10 years old so life for them cannot have been easy – Jennie perhaps having to take on the role of head of the family in her late teens.
Alfred Mewburn (1853) tree
These were Alfred and Margaret’s four children:
Alfred Mewburn 1888-1888
Alfred lived for just six months.
Jennie Mewburn 1890-?
Jennie may have been born around 1890. She appeared in the Electoral Rolls.
Alfred Thomas 1892-?
Alfred Thomas was born in 1892. He married Daisy Ethel Wall in 1911 – but nothing else is known about them.
Albert Haxton 1899-1976
Albert Haxton was born in 1899. The Electoral Rolls suggest that he may have been married at some point before 1931 to a Thelma Edith though the online records provide no confirmation. They also suggest there was a son who mostly lived with them until at least 1980 though there is no indication that he married. The line may have ended at this point.
William Mewburn 1823-1900
William was born on the 1st November 1823 in Leeds, Yorkshire and baptized there on the 25th January 1824. He married Elizabeth Poulton, daughter of Edward Poulton, on the 25th April 1848 in Manchester, Lancashire. She was born about 1825 and it may be her christening on the 10th July 1825 at Claines, Worcestershire; parents Edward Poulton and Elizabeth.
William emigrated from Gravesend to Port Phillip, New South Wales aboard the Maitland, with Elizabeth, arriving on the 7th January 1849. At that time he was describing himself as a labourer.
They moved around as the births of their children show, from Toorak to South Yarra to Prahran. However, after 15 years in Australia they moved to New Zealand to live on South Island at Dunedin – that fine Scottish outpost.
The Age, Melbourne, reports an insolvency case on the 10th April 1861 relating to a William Mewburn, a mason and brickmaker. Probably it was this William. He had bought land in Prahran for £400, spent £70 to build a house, mortgaged it to a Mr Kelly then sold it to his brother to whom he owed money.
This may have been a trigger as, of course, within two years William had re-settled in NZ.
William and Elizabeth had seven children in Australia and a further three in New Zealand. However, their story has been unraveled principally from New Zealand records since that is where the family with all surviving children decamped to around 1863.
That story is told in the New Zealand page.
The Australia connection did not quite end, though, with resettlement in New Zealand. Late in his life William, presumably after Elizabeth died, returned to Victoria and died there at Hotham in 1900.
